Today I had a couple of young sparkies come into my work to do some odd jobs for us. They only deal with commercial calls. I asked one of them about this and his advice was to change the 15amp plug to a standard 10amp one. He said since the house runs on 20amp circuits I’ve checked the circuit breakers even at w the machine shouldn’t overload the circuit — even with say the fridge etc running, he reckoned the total draw of all that would only be a few hundred watts, which would put it bellow the 20amp limitation I forget what that is in watts.
He said that in doing all this, if it didn’t work all that would happen was the circuit breaker would trip. He didn’t think there was any real risk in this, and that the only side effect would be a possible discolouration of the power outlet — although he didn’t explain why, but that if there was a fault at any time the circuit breaker or safety switch would trip.
I would have taken his word for it except he was young — early 20’s, and I don’t quite know if he is an authority on the matter since he obviously couldn’t be blamed if it all went tits up.

Funny, my experience has been the exact opposite Almost all the shunt trips I’ve seen can handle more than one voltage and need a separate circuit to feed the shunt coil and make the breaker trip. I’m using SquareD numbers here because that’s what I have been mainly using and have the numbers handy on my phone The coil ratings on the ones I’ve seen are 12 to 24 volts.
Those I see in a lot of car washes inside control cabinets. They can handle AC or DC voltages. I see them all the time in gas stations and started running into them a lot more the last few years.

Serehill can correct me if I’m wrong. I used fusible link in my Delco CS install. I patterned it after the stock setup on my old chevy truck which has the same alternator. I think that the link will hold a short term surge a little better as that is what it is made for. Most manufacturers use fusible link in the factory setup. I was using 10 gauge wire so I went with a 14 gauge fuseable link. If you were to go with 8 gauge wire you would want to go with a 12 gauge link.
